After love
ONE DAY TOO LATE
Where absence learns to speak.
Read the complete poemYou came back one evening,
With an old smile on your face,
Talking as if no time had passed,
As if I was still standing
At the same old place.
You said you missed my listening,
The way I understood,
You remembered all the little things
You once never thought
Were any good.
But where were you,
When I needed one honest word?
When my heart kept calling,
And every call returned
Like a lonely bird
Flying back unheard?
I am not angry now,
Nor do I wish you pain,
But a field left dry for years
Cannot become green
With one sudden rain.
You came with love
One day too late.
The heart had waited—
Then learned not to wait.
